Installing a dash cam is one of the best things you can do for your safety on the road — and it's easier than you think. Most drivers can complete the installation in under 30 minutes with no tools required. Here's exactly how to do it.
What You'll Need
- Your dash cam and all included accessories
- A microSD card (32GB or 64GB recommended)
- A clean microfiber cloth
- Optional: a trim removal tool for hiding cables
Step 1: Choose Your Mounting Location
The best spot for your dash cam is behind the rearview mirror on the windshield. This position:
- Keeps the camera out of your line of sight
- Provides a clear, centered view of the road
- Makes it easy to run the power cable along the roofline
For dual or triple-channel dash cams, the rear camera typically mounts on the rear windshield, and the interior camera clips onto the rearview mirror or mounts on the ceiling.
Step 2: Clean the Windshield
Wipe the mounting area with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Remove any dust, oil, or residue. A clean surface ensures the adhesive mount sticks firmly and stays in place — even in summer heat.
Step 3: Attach the Mount
Peel the protective film from the adhesive pad and press the mount firmly against the windshield for 30 seconds. Most mounts use either:
- Adhesive pad — permanent, very secure
- Suction cup — removable, easy to reposition
Wait at least 15 minutes before attaching the camera to let the adhesive set.
Step 4: Insert the Memory Card
Insert your microSD card into the dash cam before mounting it. Most dash cams require the card to be inserted with the label facing a specific direction — check your manual. A 32GB card holds approximately 4 hours of 1080P footage before loop recording overwrites the oldest files.
Step 5: Connect the Power Cable
You have two options for powering your dash cam:
- 12V cigarette lighter / OBD port — easiest option, plug and play
- Hardwire kit — connects directly to your fuse box for a cleaner look and 24-hour parking mode support
For most drivers, the cigarette lighter option is perfectly fine. Run the cable along the roofline, down the A-pillar, and along the dashboard to keep it tidy. Use the included cable clips or tuck the cable under the rubber trim.
Step 6: Adjust the Camera Angle
Power on the dash cam and check the live view on the screen. Adjust the angle so that:
- The horizon sits roughly in the upper third of the frame
- The road ahead is clearly visible
- The camera is level (not tilted left or right)
Step 7: Configure Your Settings
Before hitting the road, set up these key settings:
- Date and time — critical for legal use of footage
- Loop recording — turn on so the card never fills up
- G-Sensor sensitivity — set to medium to auto-save footage during impacts
- Parking mode — enable if you want monitoring while parked
Tips for a Clean Installation
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to tuck cables behind the headliner and door seals
- Avoid running cables across the dashboard where they can distract you
- Test the camera before finalizing cable routing
