This is the most fundamental safety rule. If the speaker impedance is lower than the minimum load impedance specified by the amplifier, it will cause amplifier overload, resulting in severe heating, increased distortion, and potentially permanent damage to the amplifier.


When the amplifier's output impedance perfectly matches the speaker's impedance, the amplifier can deliver its rated maximum power, and sound quality performance is also more stable. If the speaker's impedance is much higher than the amplifier's output impedance, the amplifier's output power will decrease, resulting in insufficient loudness and degraded dynamic performance.


Common scenario examples An amplifier labeled "8Ω 100W" can deliver a rated output power of 100W when paired with an 8Ω speaker, achieving optimal sound quality. When connected to a 16Ω speaker, the actual output power drops to approximately 50W, resulting in lower volume. When connected to a 4Ω speaker, the risk of amplifier overload increases significantly, and its use is not recommended.
